Nightpiece

By James Joyce

Night's darkness and the sudden lights Stagger and fall; the starlit heights Gleam on the earth's brow in icy white. The souls below in terror turn to their loved earth -- Alas, how they yearn! Moonlight on the ocean's swell Sends wavering beams along the track Where centuries of sorrow dwell. Their whitened ghosts, the leavings of the night, Quaver and fade into the murky height.
